There are two light green sculptural chime works hanging from the ceiling by the artists Rebecca Bruno and Mak Kern. Behind this work to the left is a large sculpture depicting a pearl stud placed on the floor by the artist Alex Nazari. To the right of this artwork is an installation of plumeria plants on a wooden dolly by the artist David Horvitz. To the right of this work is a large abstract painting with various shades of pink, black, blue and green on brown canvas by the artist Lindsay August-Salazar. In front of this artwork is a sculpture depicting a cobalt-blue deer with a plastic chips bag over its head by the artists Galería Perdida. And in front of this work is a video artwork on two TV monitors by the artists pecking nets. One TV monitor has a blank white screen and the other TV monitor has a black screen with the words Spatial White.

In this artwork by the artist Matthew Lax, a 16 mm video projector is playing a black and white work. The still pictured here features two dogs in the snow.

This artwork installation by the artist Hannah Varamini is comprised of various colored seaweed squares stitched together to form a canopy. The canopy covers the ceiling and the far back wall of the room.

This artwork installation by the artist David Horvitz includes three plumeria trees in plastic containers along with a watering can. There is also a white rock. All of these objects are placed on a wooden dolly.

The Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery was pleased to announce Juried Exhibition 2018, a group exhibition which introduced a new generation of Los Angeles artists. Featuring students and recent graduates from the region’s leading MFA programs, the works in the exhibition encompassed a variety of media, including performance, video, sculpture, painting, ceramics, photography, and installation. This large-scale exhibition took the pulse of contemporary art practice in the city.

 

The opening reception of Juried Exhibition 2018 featured a special performance by Rebecca Bruno, the founder of HomeLA, with Samantha Mohr. Other notable works included Hannah Varamini’s dramatic site-specific seaweed installation, Colony Reprise, and Gal Amiram’s Doubles, a monumental 24 foot inkjet print, which critiqued the manipulation of images through digital technology.

 

Also not to be missed were Lena Daly’s sculptural installation ReCharge Battery, employing UV light and ultrasound, Aniko Kuikka’s video installation, White Sugar, which offered a compelling fairytale for the modern age, and Adee Roberson’s vibrant paintings that spoke to African diasporic memory.

 

Artists were selected from an open call for entries by a jury comprising Jonathan Griffin, art critic; Jamillah James, Curator, Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and Steven Nelson, Professor of African and African American Art History, UCLA. The 2018 edition of the juried exhibition builds on the legacy of this pioneering exhibition, which historically has provided a platform for emerging artists in Southern California since 1953.
