Susan Silton: Diving into the Wreck—the first major survey exhibition of the Los Angeles based artist features more than 150 works across installation, photography, video, audio, text, and print. It takes its title from Adrienne Rich’s 1972 poem and invites audiences to consider words not only as forms of expression, but as tools for orientation, connection, and collective action.
You can become part of the exhibition by participating in In everything there is the trace, a key installation that reflects Silton’s longstanding engagement with language, public memory, collective participation, and art’s capacity to shape our social and political lives.
Registration is now open for one-hour collective typing sessions at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery.
Gather around Silton’s interconnected, three-legged tables and collaboratively retype Octavia E. Butler’s landmark novel Parable of the Sower (1993) on manual typewriters in stencil mode—without ink. The work transforms reading and writing into a tactile, shared experience, asking participants to slow down, encounter Butler’s language closely, and contribute to a living work of art. Set in a dystopian 2020s Los Angeles, Parable of the Sower follows a young woman imagining new ways of living amid social and environmental upheaval. More than three decades after its publication, Butler’s visionary novel continues to resonate with the present. Through collective typing, participants are invited to consider how stories shape our relationships to one another in a changing and uncertain world.
